Mumbai Central will be first station to get free high speed WiFi

RailTel Corporation of India, telecom wing of Indian Railway, has partnered with Google to set-up a high-speed Wi-Fi network at 400 stations across the country. This is world’s biggest public Wi-Fi project. As part of this engagement, Mumbai Central will be the foremost station to get this as WiFi services. As per reports, the service will be free for users for the first 30 minutes, beyond that they will be charged a particular amount.

After taking over as CEO of Google, this is Sunder Pichai’s first maiden visit to India. And during this visit he finalized some important stuff for the country. He implemented the promise which Pichai made to PM Narendra Modi’s when he visited US this year. He signed an agreement with RailTel to provide Wi-Fi facilities at 400 stations across the country. He has promised to provide high-speed connectivity with the ability to download movie in just four minutes. Pichai stated, “100 stations will have Wi-fi by December 2016. Among which Mumbai Central to go live by January. “During his two day visit in India, Pichai will meet President Pranad Mukherjee & Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He will also address students at Delhi University College.

Minister of State for Railway – Manoj Sinha said that RailTel Corporation of india Ltd (RCIL), a PSU under Railway Ministry, already signed an agreement with Mahataa Information India Pvt Ltd (MIIPL), an arm of Google Inc, to equip 400 stations with Wi-Fi in two phases. It is planned that in first phase as many as 100 A1 & A category would be provisioned with WiFi network access, while the facility would be extended to 300 stations in the second phase. Non-suburban stations with an annual passenger earning of more than 60 Crore INR are categorized as A1 stations, and those with yearly passenger income from 8 crore INR to 60 crore INR falls under A category stations.

US-based technology giant- Google had an agenda of bringing internet to everyone in world’s second largest populated country – India. Once people will be having access to web, Google wants to make sure they get right information. The program will be operational with provision of Wi-Fi in 100 railway stations in 2016.

Along with provision of free-WiFi at railway stations, Pichai also expressed that Google want to improve web connectivity in rural areas under Project Balloon. Though, Indian Government said that the project might not be viable as it interferes with services offered by telecom operators. Apart from providing internet access to many untapped region, Google also aspires to hire more engineers for Bangalore & Hyderabad.

Pichai even mentioned about women in a village to internet project, which they ran on pilot basis for increasing internet awareness in India. “The results were so positive that we are thinking of expanding the project. In the next three years, we will introduce internet to women in more than 3,000 village”, he exclaimed.
